Nonconservative exact small-sample inference for discrete data

چکیده
Exact small-sample methods for discrete data use probability distributions that do not depend on unknown parameters. However, they are conservative inferentially: the actual error probabilities for tests and confidence intervals are bounded above by the nominal level. This article surveys ways of reducing or even eliminating the conservatism. Fuzzy inference is a recent innovation that enables one to achieve the error probability exactly. We present a simple way of conducting fuzzy inference for discrete one-parameter exponential family distributions. In practice, most scientists would find this approach unsuitable yet might be disappointed by the conservatism of ordinary exact methods. Thus, we recommend using exact small-sample distributions but with inferences based on the mid-P value. This approach can be motivated by fuzzy inference, it is less conservative than standard exact methods, yet usually it does well in terms of achieving desired error probabilities. We illustrate for inferences about the binomial parameter. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Exact Evaluation of Marginal Likelihood Integrals
Inference in Bayesian statistics involves the evaluation of marginal likelihood integrals. We present algebraic algorithms for computing such integrals exactly for discrete data of small sample size. The underlying statistical models are mixtures of independent distributions, or, in geometric language, secant varieties of Segre-Veronese varieties.
متن کاملBayesian Inference for Spatial Beta Generalized Linear Mixed Models
In some applications, the response variable assumes values in the unit interval. The standard linear regression model is not appropriate for modelling this type of data because the normality assumption is not met. Alternatively, the beta regression model has been introduced to analyze such observations. A beta distribution represents a flexible density family on (0, 1) interval that covers symm...
متن کاملAccurate Inference for the Mean of the Poisson-Exponential Distribution
Although the random sum distribution has been well-studied in probability theory, inference for the mean of such distribution is very limited in the literature. In this paper, two approaches are proposed to obtain inference for the mean of the Poisson-Exponential distribution. Both proposed approaches require the log-likelihood function of the Poisson-Exponential distribution, but the exact for...

Advection-dispersion equation is solved in numerically by using combinations of differential quadrature method (DQM) and various time integration techniques covering some explicit or implicit single and multi step methods. Two different initial boundary value problems modeling conservative and nonconservative transports of some substance represented by initial data are chosen as test problems. ...
متن کاملProgressive and Discrete Auctions: a Finite Sample Evaluation Based on Dominated Strategies
We propose an econometric evaluation for progressive auctions with discrete increments. Although very common in practice, this kind of mechanism raises many theoretical diiculties. First, there is no closed form equilibrium strategies. Thus the econometrician cannot rely on a single formula to build a model. Second, the discrete nature of the outcome complicates the inference. Moreover, meaning...
